Brief Summary

The City of Hoboken was incorporated March 28th, 1855, at which time it had a population of 6,727. In 1906 that number grew to 70,000. Today, the current population is an estimated 40,000.

As a result of the favorable location of Hoboken—its proximity to New York City and accessibility from all parts of the country—its growth was steady and rapid. The city is especially proud of its school of mechanical engineering, the Stevens Institute of Technology, which has acquired a worldwide reputation and ranks with the best technical schools of the country. The Stevens Institute was founded by Mr. Edwin A. Stevens, was incorporated in 1870, and opened its doors for the admission of students in 1871.

Hoboken’s rapid growth from 1860 to 1910 and its role as a gateway to America brought many immigrants from Europe to the city. The Germans were the first, and German became a dominant language throughout Hoboken. After World War I, the city’s ethnic character changed. Germans were followed by Irish, Italians, Yugoslavs, Latinos, and Asian Indians. Hoboken’s ethnic vitality enriches the city’s contemporary life.

During the 1970s and 1980s Hoboken attracted artists, musicians, young professionals, and "bohemian types" who valued the aesthetics of Hoboken’s residential, civic, and commercial, architecture; its sense of community; its relatively (compared to Lower Manhattan) cheaper rents; and quick, easy train access to New York City. The renowned Maxwell’s (a live music venue and restaurant) opened and Hoboken became a "hip" place to live.

Today Hoboken is one of the most sought-after communities in the country. It’s a thriving town, with development showing no signs of slowing down. It is a true gem, offering every convenience of a large city with the comfort of a small village. Hoboken truly is one of a kind.
